Dream of Gerontius ()

concert poster

We are having fun rehearsing the much-loved music of Edward Elgar and are looking forward to welcoming the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra and solo singers.

The Dream of Gerontius is a setting by Elgar of text by Cardinal John Henry Newman. It tells the story of Gerontius (from the Greek for ‘old man’) as he nears the end of his life and follows his spiritual journey from life to the afterlife.

The music has tremendous variety, from a hushed beginning, through to a huge chorus of angels Praise to the Holiest, then later a sinister chorus of demons, a shattering moment as Gerontius reaches the throne of God for judgement. His soul is spared and he is led away by his guardian angel Softly and gently and the work ends with a poignant farewell from the angel and chorus.
